Q1: What are you seeking in potential puppy homes?
A1: Above all else, I am looking for lifelong homes who are willing to maintain a consistent relationship with their dog's breeder, & to share updates on their pup as they progress through life. While I do not intend to be a breeder who delegates unreasonable facets of my litter's lives after placements, I DO strongly hope that the people who I've chosen to trust with puppies are willing to keep me frequently in the loop regarding the pup's experiences, struggles, & even simply day to day shenanigans. That being said, homes with an interest (& especially prior experience) in conformation & sports are highly desirable, as I would love to see my bred-by puppies out there proving themselves on the field and/or in the ring! A fenced-in yard & experience with sighthounds are certainly ideal traits, though not necessarily dealbreakers in an otherwise perfect home.
Q2: When do you open applications for litters? When are placements decided?
A2: I will not open applications for any litter until after puppies are born & thriving. This is to ensure that there is any possibility of available pups before requesting in depth information from interested parties. Puppy homes will be decided after structure & temperament evaluations around 8wks old; I do not guarantee any placements prior to reviewing applications after evals.
Q3: Do you keep a waitlist?
A3: I do not have a waitlist in the typical "first come, first serve" sense. I keep an ongoing waiting "pool," and will match puppies to families according to the temperament of the dog, aptitude for sports/showing, & needs of the family. Earlier inquiries do not guarantee a puppy placement, though homes that have made efforts to establish an ongoing relationship have a higher likelihood to be at the forefront of the mind for consideration.
Q4: Do you have location restrictions on where you prefer to place?
A4: I have a high preference for homes within surrounding states (SC, TN, VA), and even moreso locally here in NC. That being said, the perfect home has no limit on location; I am happy to engage in inquiries with those outside of my preferred range, & make recommendations to appropriate breeders in the event my kennel may not be an ideal fit!
Q5: Would you recommend a Silken Windhound as a Service Dog prospect, & would you place one as such?
A5: As a general rule of thumb - no, I would not blanketly recommend the breed for Service Dog work. While I have an inherent bias with Marnie as my personal SD, Silkens as a whole do not display the consistent level of workability that I would deem appropriate in a prospect. There are absolutely individuals in the breed that exhibit desirable traits & excel at their jobs for their handlers, but those dogs have what I would consider to be unique temperaments, & I would not expect that to be replicated on a consistent basis. I will NOT place a Silken in a home with the sole intent of becoming a Service Dog who would be eligible for rehoming if they were a wash. That being said, I am certainly not opposed to the rare circumstance of a puppy showing strong aptitude for & enjoyment of Service Dog work within a home seeking a Silken Windhound above specifically a potential SD prospect.
